Latest Technology News: Apple has officially unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, at its “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, 2026. The launch marks one of the biggest design changes in the iPhone lineup since the original iPhone was introduced in 2007, with Apple calling it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.”

Apple describes the iPhone Duo as a major shift for the iPhone, combining a traditional smartphone experience with a much larger foldable display. The device opens into a 7.6-inch inner screen while retaining a compact 5.4-inch outer display when closed.

Alongside the iPhone Duo, Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, as well as new Apple Watch and Air Pods products. The event was also notable as the first major product launch under new Apple CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1, 2026. Cook remains with the company as executive chairman.

iPhone Duo: Design and Display

The iPhone Duo uses a book-style folding design. When closed, it functions as a normal iPhone with a 5.4-inch outer display, which Apple says covers more than 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. When opened, it unfolds into a much larger 7.6-inch inner display, giving users significantly more screen space for video, gaming, browsing and multitasking.

Apple says the iPhone Duo is its thinnest iPhone ever when unfolded. The inner display uses a custom nano-texture coating designed to reduce glare and minimize the visibility of the fold crease.

Build and Durability

The iPhone Duo is built from Grade 5 titanium, with Ceramic Shield protection and a reinforced hinge designed to support the display. The device carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

It is available in two finishes:

  • Star White
  • Night Sky

Notably, Apple has moved to Touch ID integrated into the side button rather than Face ID on the Duo a departure from its recent Pro-line iPhones, likely tied to fitting the necessary hardware into the folding chassis.

Software: iOS 27 and Split View

Apple has adapted parts of iOS 27 specifically for the Duo’s dual-screen format. The software adjusts automatically as users open, close, or rotate the phone.

Key software features include:

  • Split View, letting users run two apps side by side on the inner display
  • A redesigned Stand By mode for the outer display, showing clocks, photos, and widgets
  • App adaptability, allowing apps to resize themselves between the compact outer display and the larger inner display

Apple Intelligence and Siri

Apple used the event to continue building out its AI story. The company highlighted Apple Intelligence features on the Duo, along with improvements to Siri, emphasizing a mix of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute for privacy. CEO John Ternus positioned the iPhone as “the best personal device for AI” given its existing privacy protections.

Performance

The iPhone Duo is powered by the same Apple A20 Pro chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro models, built on a 2-nanometer process. Apple has not yet published detailed benchmark comparisons against the previous generation, so specific performance improvement figures should be treated as pending official confirmation.

Price and Release Date

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB model about $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro ($1,199) and $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max ($1,299). Storage options go up to 2TB, though Apple has not published pricing for the higher tiers.

  • Pre-orders open: October 16, 2026
  • On sale: October 23, 2026, in more than 70 countries and regions, with 28 more countries following on October 30
  • The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, by comparison, ship earlier, on September 18, 2026

Apple is also offering the Duo through its Apple Upgrade leasing program, starting at $57.99/month on a 24-month term.

Competing With Samsung and Huawei

Apple enters a foldable smartphone market where Samsung and Huawei have already established competing devices for several years. The iPhone Duo differentiates itself through Apple’s ecosystem, iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and premium titanium construction.

However, its $1,999 starting price makes it significantly more expensive than many established foldables and could limit its early appeal to Apple loyalists and premium-device buyers rather than the mass market.

Why It Matters

The iPhone Duo is more than another addition to Apple’s lineup it’s the company’s first major move into foldable smartphones and a new way to think about how an iPhone can be used. The combination of a pocket-sized outer display and a large inner screen could appeal to people who want more screen space without carrying a separate tablet.

The biggest question is whether the $1,999 price limits it to early adopters, or whether Apple’s ecosystem and software experience can help push foldables toward the mainstream the way earlier iPhone launches have done for other categories.
