Nintendo Boosts Switch 2 Sales Target to 19 Million Units as Global Demand Surges
Nintendo has raised its sales forecast for the Switch 2 console, reflecting growing momentum for its next-generation gaming system.
The Japanese gaming powerhouse now expects to sell 19 million units of the Switch 2 in the fiscal year ending March 2026, up from its earlier estimate of 15 million units.
Here’s how Nintendo performed in its fiscal second quarter ending September 30, compared with market expectations:
-
Revenue: ¥527.2 billion (≈$3.7 billion) vs. ¥461.76 billion expected
-
Net Profit: ¥102.9 billion vs. ¥63.6 billion expected
Revenue jumped by over 90% year-on-year, while net profit surged more than 270%, underscoring the strength of the Switch 2 launch and its growing player base.
Since its June debut, the Switch 2 has fueled a strong rally in Nintendo’s stock, which is up nearly 40% this year. The company sold 4.54 million units in the September quarter — a dip from the post-launch surge earlier in the year — but said overall demand remains “solid.”
In total, Nintendo has sold 10.36 million Switch 2 units since launch. Popular titles like “Mario Kart World” and “Donkey Kong Bonanza” have been major growth drivers, helping the company move 11.95 million software units for the console during the quarter.
Nintendo’s optimism about continued demand has led it to raise its full-year financial outlook. The Kyoto-based company now expects net sales of ¥2.25 trillion, up from ¥1.9 trillion, and increased its net profit forecast by 17% to ¥350 billion.
Strong Game Lineup Fuels Confidence
Nintendo’s original Switch, launched in 2017, remains its second-best-selling console ever, second only to the Nintendo DS. The hybrid design — allowing players to game both at home and on the go — continues to resonate with fans.
Although analysts initially questioned whether the Switch 2 would be distinct enough from its predecessor, early results suggest robust consumer enthusiasm. The upcoming holiday season will now serve as a crucial test for sustained demand.
Nintendo plans to replicate its proven formula of strong software support through flagship titles. The company recently released “Pokémon Legends: Z-A”, which also comes bundled with the Switch 2, while new titles like “Kirby Air Riders” and “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” are expected later this year.
