Apple Launches Detroit Manufacturing Academy Amid U.S. Job Pressure and Global Expansion

Amid increasing calls from former President Donald Trump to bring more jobs back to American soil, Apple is rolling out a new manufacturing-focused initiative in downtown Detroit. The newly established Apple Manufacturing Academy—developed in partnership with Michigan State University—is set to open this August and will offer hands-on training in manufacturing and artificial intelligence, targeting small to mid-sized businesses.

According to Apple, the program is designed to help shape the future of American manufacturing, with Apple engineers directly participating in the educational workshops. The tech giant, known for its complex global production network, manufactures millions of devices across the world but has faced ongoing scrutiny over its international footprint.

“This new initiative will empower more businesses to embrace smart manufacturing and unlock innovation that benefits both their operations and the broader economy,” said Sabih Khan, Apple’s chief operating officer.

The launch is part of Apple’s broader strategy to spotlight its domestic investments and reduce political pressure. Back in February, the company announced plans to inject over $500 billion into the U.S. economy over five years through product development, infrastructure, and job creation. These efforts also include AI server assembly in Houston and chip sourcing from a facility in Arizona.

Despite public praise from Trump earlier this year, Apple has remained a target for criticism due to its expanding operations in countries like India. Trump previously expressed frustration with Apple CEO Tim Cook for diversifying production overseas, emphasizing his preference for U.S.-based manufacturing.

Apple already operates several software development academies globally, often in strategic regions where the company is building governmental or commercial ties. Its only other U.S.-based academy—also run in partnership with Michigan State—is focused on software development and trains around 200 students annually.

In addition to on-site courses, the new manufacturing program will offer virtual training options and consulting support for businesses later this year.
