Amazon is set to phase out its standalone Freevee streaming service in August as part of a broader effort to streamline its entertainment offerings under the Prime Video umbrella.

Freevee, which originally launched in 2019 as an ad-supported platform under IMDb—acquired by Amazon in 1998—offered free TV shows, original content, and select titles from Prime Video. It was primarily accessible through its own dedicated app.

According to a recent user update, the Freevee app will officially shut down next month. From then on, viewers can continue watching Freevee content—TV shows, movies, and live programming—directly on Prime Video, even without a Prime membership.

“Freevee TV shows, movies, and Live TV now have a new home—Prime Video,” Amazon announced.

The move was anticipated as early as November last year, when Amazon hinted at simplifying its content delivery experience, as reported by Deadline.

This transition follows Prime Video’s shift to an ad-supported model in January 2024. Currently, Prime Video is bundled with a $15-per-month Prime membership or available on its own for $9. Users can also opt out of ads for an extra $2 per month.
