Musk’s xAI Takes Apple & OpenAI to Court Over Alleged Monopoly in AI & App Store
Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, accusing the two tech giants of engaging in an anticompetitive partnership that unfairly harms emerging artificial intelligence players.
The case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, claims that Apple has been suppressing competitors like xAI’s chatbot Grok by lowering their visibility in the App Store, while allegedly boosting OpenAI’s ChatGPT integration across iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Musk’s filing argues that Apple and OpenAI are working together to maintain dominance in both smartphones and generative AI, describing the collaboration as a direct attempt to stifle innovation and competition.
In response, an OpenAI representative dismissed the allegations, calling Musk’s claims another example of his “pattern of harassment.” Apple, however, has so far declined to comment.
The lawsuit comes after Musk openly criticized Apple earlier this month, warning of a potential antitrust fight and claiming that the App Store has become hostile to any AI firm attempting to compete with OpenAI.
This legal battle further escalates the rivalry between Musk and OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. Once co-founders of OpenAI in 2015, their split in 2018 has since grown into a bitter feud, with Musk previously suing OpenAI over accusations of prioritizing profits over its original mission to serve humanity.
For now, all eyes are on how this case unfolds—especially since the outcome could reshape the balance of power between Big Tech and emerging AI startups.
