Huawei Unveils $2,500 Mate XTs Trifold Smartphone as It Pushes for Global Comeback
Huawei has officially launched the second generation of its trifold smartphone, the Mate XTs, as part of its push to solidify dominance in China and expand its footprint overseas.
The Mate XTs, priced from 17,999 yuan ($2,520) to 21,999 yuan, features two hinges that allow the device to fold at multiple points, transforming it into a tablet-sized screen when fully opened. This marks Huawei’s follow-up to the Mate XT, the world’s first trifold smartphone introduced last year.
With its innovative design, Huawei is looking to build on the momentum it regained in late 2023. According to Counterpoint Research, Huawei’s share of the Chinese smartphone market rose to 18% in Q2, making it the country’s largest smartphone vendor. In the foldable category, the brand dominates with a staggering 75% market share, as per data from IDC.
Sales of the first-generation Mate XT reached 470,000 units, generating more than $1.3 billion in revenue by mid-2024. Analysts note that despite its high price, demand has remained strong, proving consumers are willing to pay a premium for groundbreaking technology.
The Mate XTs runs on HarmonyOS 5.1, Huawei’s in-house operating system, and is positioned as a productivity powerhouse, supporting PC-like multitasking features such as resizable and stackable windows. The device comes in four colors, powered by a 5600mAh battery, and includes perks like 50% off screen replacements and two free home service visits.
Although Huawei remains restricted outside of China due to U.S. sanctions, the Mate XTs showcases the company’s determination to innovate and reclaim its spot on the global stage.
