In a sweeping move to clean up its platform, Meta announced on Monday that it has eliminated roughly 10 million fake Facebook accounts during the first half of 2025. These profiles were primarily posing as popular content creators and were flagged as part of Meta’s ongoing campaign to crack down on spam and deceptive activity.

This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy to enhance authenticity on users’ feeds by demoting and removing content deemed inauthentic—especially that which is mass-produced using AI tools. Alongside this, Meta is tightening its policies to prioritize original content from genuine creators.

The company also reported taking action against about 500,000 accounts involved in misleading or spam-like behavior, including demoting their comments and limiting content visibility to prevent monetization.

Meta emphasized its growing use of AI to detect and suppress uncredited duplicate content, especially videos and images. This comes as the company invests heavily in AI infrastructure, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealing plans to spend hundreds of billions to bring Meta’s AI supercluster online next year.

With artificial intelligence fueling a surge of low-quality content—often referred to as “AI slop”—other platforms are following suit. YouTube, for example, recently revised its policies to restrict monetization for repetitive or mass-produced content. While this led to confusion, the platform clarified that the policy targets spam, not creators using AI to enrich their content.
