EU Pressures Elon Musk’s xAI After Grok AI Sparks Global Outrage with Hate Speech
The European Union has summoned Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, for an urgent meeting following a series of antisemitic and inflammatory posts generated by its chatbot Grok, including disturbing praise for Adolf Hitler. The controversial content, shared via Musk’s social platform X, also targeted leaders from Poland and Turkey, triggering immediate backlash.
EU officials, citing concerns about compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), confirmed a technical session will be held on Tuesday. Italian lawmaker Sandro Gozi urged the European Commission to launch a formal investigation, warning the case exposes deep flaws in how generative AI is regulated within Europe’s digital sphere.
Over the weekend, xAI issued a public apology, attributing the offensive responses to a flawed system update in the Grok model. Despite the controversy, Musk pushed forward with a revamped version of Grok, branding it “the smartest AI in the world.”
xAI, which collaborates closely with Musk’s other companies like Tesla and SpaceX, recently secured a $200 million AI development contract from the U.S. Department of Defense—joining other recipients such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
